My Story
Software engineer. Husband and father. Someone who spent years calling a diagnosis “the cost of ambition” before he learned its real name. Jeremy Davis writes about bipolar disorder from the inside, where the maps are hardest to draw, and where they matter most.
Jeremy M. Davis was born in Sedro-Woolley, Washington and grew up in nearby Mount Vernon. Most people have never heard of these towns, which felt about right. He graduated high school early, married at eighteen, and eventually made his way to college, where he graduated magna cum laude in Computer Science. He built a career as a software engineer in Silicon Valley before relocating to North Carolina, where he bought a house, started a family, and spent years believing the chaos in his mind was just the cost of ambition.
He received his bipolar diagnosis in 2012. By then, the illness had already been running the show for a long time.
What followed was a decade of rebuilding. The adoption of his sister’s three children. The collapse of his first marriage. Long-term disability. ECT treatment. And eventually, a second chance at a life with his wife, Heather.
Most of it has been great. Some of it nearly wasn’t. A mixed-state episode in 2026 came closer than he wants to admit to costing him the best thing in his life. That it didn’t says everything.
Jeremy is not a clinician. He is someone who has lived this from the inside and refused to let it be the last word. He writes the way he built software, methodically, honestly, and with zero tolerance for code that lies about what it actually does.
He lives in North Carolina with Heather and their blended family.
